About the Program

The DMEPOS CBP was mandated by Congress through the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003. The DMEPOS CBP has been an essential tool to help Medicare set sustainable payment rates for certain DMEPOS items, save money for beneficiaries and taxpayers, and limit fraud, waste, and abuse in the Medicare program, while ensuring access to quality items.

DMEPOS CBP Round 2021 Contracts expired December 31, 2023. The next round of competitive bidding has not been announced by CMS. Effective January 1, 2024, there is a temporary gap period in the DMEPOS CBP. CMS has provided specific guidelines and reminders for payment of DMEPOS items and services during this temporary gap period in a Temporary Gap Period fact sheet.

CMS contracted with Palmetto GBA to operate as the CBIC to assist CMS in administering the DMEPOS CBP for Round 2021 and continue supporting CMS efforts during the temporary gap period.

For additional information on the DMEPOS CBP, continue to monitor the CMS.gov and CBIC websites for updates.
